Our March 2018 Fine Art auction is in the final stages of preparation, and among the highlights is a series of paintings by renowned New Zealand born-Australian artist Harold Septimus Power.
Born in 1877, Power trained as an artist and illustrator in Melbourne and later at the Académie Julian, Paris. In 1917 he was appointed official war artist with the Australian Imperial Force and later, he split his time between Europe and Australia, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Water Colour Association and the Paris Old Salon.
His work remained popular throughout his life and Sir Arthur Streeton’s comments on Power ring true in this work: “One is impressed first by a tremendous display of colour and a dauntless feeling of optimism … He displays remarkable knowledge and vigour in his paintings of animals”.
This auction features Power’s impresssive Judith, Ralph and David Wilson on Horseback by Sea – a classic family portrait demonstrating Power’s status as one of the leaders in equine art in Australia.
From the international sector we will present the work of Italian artist Vittorio Reggianini in his masterful depiction of European middle class in Goodnight. His elegant portrayal of the interior and the richness of the various textures draw the viewer in to the elaborate daily life of this period.
The online catalogue for this auction will be available in the coming weeks, prior to viewings in Sydney and Melbourne.
