June Helmer (1922-2017)

June Helmer was born to a Russian family in Melbourne 1922. As a young girl, she aspired to study the arts but was denied a place at art school due to an insufficient level of Latin and instead graduated in pharmaceutical chemistry.

Later in life however, June pursued her passion and enrolled at Melbourne University as a mature student and successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts and then her Master of Fine Arts.

In 1985 she published her first book entitled George Bell: The Art of Influence.

Her interest in art inspired her travels around the world, where she studied Jewish art collections and museums, the foundations of what helped her become the first adviser on the Australian collections; curator of the Jewish Museum’s first exhibition, and a vital fundraiser.

June’s collection features decorative arts and fine art, which include works by Louis Kahan, an artist who dedicated several books of his drawings to her.

We are delighted to offering The June Helmer Collection as part of  our Thursdays at Leonard Joel auctions on 15 February.
