The coincidence must not go unnoticed. Since learning of Ron Barassi’s interest in numbers, my interest in them has grown. Although my associations are far simpler in nature than his, I enjoy the fact that both June Porter’s birth year and Leonard Joel’s establishment year share 1919. So for me it was destiny that Leonard Joel should celebrate with the Porter family and Adelaide this collection that spoke of a life well travelled, of public service and an adventurous eye. Almost 300 individual bidders, international collectors and friends of June ensured a most successful auction result. By auction end more than 150% by value was achieved – an extraordinary result and testimony to both the quality of the collection and also the affection and respect with which June Porter was held in Adelaide. During the viewing period it was clear to me how personal the collection was for both people that were entertained by June at her Bagot Street residence and for those that simply knew her. For this reason it is always my wish that all bidders leave such an auction with hopefully not just interesting memories but a memento from the collection. On behalf of our Private Collections department I would like to thank the Porter family and Adelaide for allowing Leonard Joel to celebrate and share this collection with you.
